I had an amazing time at Henricus Historical Park this weekend. Though I have setup my bookbinding display and given a few lectures over the past couple of years, this was the first organized living history event where I’ve participated since 2008.
It was a grand time and we had a fantastically engaged audience. I was set up in the amazing church building that is a sight to behold in and of itself. We were occupied with questions from inquisitive adults and children all day long, and the park visitors was the most engaged audience I’ve had in a long time.
I missed out on getting to know some world class living historians as much as I would have liked, so I came back the next day with my four year old and we made the rounds.
The staff at Henricus is super friendly and engage for audiences of all ages, and my kiddo LOVES seeing the goats and chickens, and there is plenty of safe, visible space for her to have the freedom to run and explore while I can still keep an eye on her.
I was up late all week binding a series of journals and facsimiles for the event, and also glued some endpapers and completed some pamphlets while in the church.
Lunch was some natural rennet made stilton cheese and 3 month aged queso manchego with a loaf of sourdough; for dinner a Spanish spicy chickpea and lentil soup with chorizo- which was amazing.
Very much looking forward to the next time I can make it to Henricus and the next opportunity to reenact with any of the amazing people that came out!

Next event: I’ll be at the frontier Culture Museum on May 27th. The event focuses on the impact of the enclosure movement in the early 17th century, and will be a great time!
